Tips & Suggestions
This website is the last of my four streams of income that I put in place beginning five
months ago now. In fact, this site is only three weeks old as of today(2/19) and is primarily a labor of
love(yeah I know, I will be trying to make some money from it). The main reason for the site is to give all
those who are starting out in their attempt to make money online a location where they can learn what
they need to know in the shortest amount of time and for the smallest initial cash outlay.
This site will be a work in progress for about a year. I will track the progress for you and give
as many tips as I can think of to guarantee that you will safely navigate the rough waters of your
first year in this business. After the year or so is up, I will start a new site that will deal with all
those issues that come up once you have gotten your Internet business up and running. The site you are
on now will be maintained and added to now and then and essentially will become a static site to serve
as a resource for those just starting out.
I will probably reorganize these tips into different categories as time goes on but for now
I will just list them in a free floating sort of way. So here we go:
1. Learn some basic HTML
If you do not know any programming languages, it is very tempting to have
someone else do all the html coding when something needs to get added or changed on the website. I can't stress
enough the importance of being able to work with the site yourself; if only at an elementary level. Spend a
couple of days reading through an online html tutorial, it will pay huge dividends down the line.
2. Do not get sidetracked with SEO early on
When you finally decide on a strategy and begin creating your website, stay
focused on just that; creating your website. As you explore the different design possibilities on the web, you
can not help but notice the enormous amount of material out there that you know nothing about. A great deal of
this material has to do with search engine optimization and it becomes far to easy to travel down the many
byroads you will discover as you learn to promote your site. You will suddenly realize at the end of the day that
you have not gotten that much further on the actual website itself. Make a real conscious effort to avoid this
type of delay issue; stay focused on creating the site, the rest comes later.
3. Get your site up quickly; even if it is not quite ready for Prime Time
Here's the thing. Until Google, or any search engine for that matter, indexes
your website, you will not be seen. So, you want to start the clock running as soon as possible because the time
it will take for Google to "see" your site can range from 1 to 6 months. The higher number only occurs
for highly competitive areas, so don't worry. In fact, there are some tricks I will be sharing with you to
greatly reduce the indexing time. My goal now is to have my sites indexed in 7-10 days.
4. Check your internal links for correctness
A major error that webmasters make occurs when they do not consistently check
that their internal links are in working order. Search engines hand out a penalty that will have a definite
effect on your SERP's. You would be surprised at how many links are broken or dead in a moderately sized sight. I
use a great piece of free software, Xenu, every day to make sure that my own house
is in order.
5. Use a good Hosting Service
As you probably know, there are any number of sites that will host your website
for free. Unless you really know what you are doing, stay away from the freebies. There will be numerous times
you are going to need something clarified(a new Google sitemap or publishing multiple websites through one
hosting account are questions I had to deal with) or even need somebody to walk you step by step through
some complicated procedure. This is something that you will be hard pressed to get the free services to do. This
is money well spent and I recommend very strongly that you pay for this service.
6. Publish something every day
Rather than wait for significant changes to be made to your developing website, it is far better
to publish a little bit every day until the website becomes stable. This is very important from the search
engine optimization viewpoint. The spiders love new content and you can give them something every day; at a
time when the site needs to be slowly moving up on the search engine results page.
