Satellite Entities
As you design your website, you need to consider different ways of driving traffic to your site,
ways that can add value in their own right. The great thing is, these methods require only your effort,
they cost nothing. Most importantly, these "satellites" provide your website with something of paramount
importance; links. To a search engine spider, links are very important because the algorithms around which
these searches are based give positive points to sites which have a good link structure(inbound, outbound
and within pages of the site itself).
So, what are some of the characteristics of these satellite entities? Well, they have to
stand on their own right, whether you have a website or not. Another important feature to remember is
that they will all have links pointing back to your website, and not only the home page. You should give
careful thought to where you want these links to be pointing because they can add real depth to what these
entities are presenting. All right, what are some of these satellites. Three of the most important
are:
Blogs are really mini websites which started to become popular around 5 years ago. A blog(short
for weBLOG) is a one page(at least that's how they started) website which is a sort of online journal
in which the author writes about issues near and dear to his or her heart. Currently, social networking
sites are all the rage and they can trace their roots back to the emergence of the blog on the
Internet. Take a look at my blog on making money online, which I recently started. As you see, it is only one page
but it can present an enormous amount of information. Blogs are meant to be updated often and that plays an
important role to the search spiders. To keep your search rankings up it is very important to always be
providing new material. Blogs were built for just that. Notice the embedded links in my blog and how I have
them pointing to particular parts of my websites' pages. Blogging is extremely important and I will
be discussing them further as this site grows.
Articles are another orbiting entity in our website universe. Not only is it another way to
aquire links back to our site but articles are also viral in nature. Here is
what I mean. Site owners are constantly on the lookout for new content for their site and this is where the
article comes in. After writing the article, submit it to a number of article directories. From that point
on, your article is like an expanding virus population. Anyone is allowed to use your article on their site
AS LONG AS they give you the credit. Of course, the article will have several links back to
your site and I am sure you can see how these links will grow exponentially as more and more webmasters
use your article for their own purposes. Take a look at an article I have written on making money online.
Finally, there is the lens. Developed and introduced by a veteran Internet marketer, they can be
thought of as a sort of blog; but much more specific in nature. You develop your lens at Squidoo.com(great
name!) and you can create a lens on any topic of interest. Of course, you guessed it,
you can place links back to your website within the lens. Take a look at my lens on making money online. One of the reasons I use lenses in my website
universe is that they were developed by a marketer and, from the ground up, were constructed to be very search
engine friendly. Notice, on the left panel, that you can add your lens to a number of social networking sites,
thereby increasing the reach of your links. Very powerful indeed.
Creating these kinds of satellites in your website sphere of influence will pay
great dividends down the road and expand the potential of you website concept.
